The Joy of Pets
Hi there everyone,
So the research is in (not that we pet lovers didn't already know it), that people are healthier, and live longer when their is an animal around.
The Toronto Star states " simply petting a dog or cat can lower blood pressure, heart rate, and anxiety levels ".
Pets being brought into retirement and nursing homes have had great results with Alzheimer's disease. In one case in particular a gentleman who did not communicate with anyone starting speaking to a small puppy that was brought into the home.
In fact there is " a growing body of research suggesting that the benefits of the human-animal bond on mental and physical may delay the need to go into a nursing hoe or lessen the length of a hospital
visit ".
I believe that it is the caretaking responsibility that we take on with our pets. As we know there are studies with the elderly with respect to taking care of plants. Those who had to take responsibility for watering their own plants were healthier than those who had their plants watered by staff.
Pets I believe give the caretaker a purpose that they often do not feel when they get older.
Let's try to help our elders by keeping them stimulated by our pets, even if it is as simple as allowing them to pet and bond with the animals.
What a great relationship!!
Have a great day!
Cheryl
